  1. Aaron Vickers (@AAVickers) tweeted at 1:36 PM on Fri, Jan 23, 2015: NHL has announced Aaron Ekblad has been added to the All-Star Game. Seems as though there's still an open forward spot remaining. Odd that they would announce Ekblad but not Gaudreau.
  2. Aaron Vickers (@AAVickers) tweeted at 0:04 PM on Fri, Jan 23, 2015: Interesting to note there's been no official announcement as to who is replacing Crosby and Johnson yet. Aaron Vickers (@AAVickers) tweeted at 0:04 PM on Fri, Jan 23, 2015: And Gaudreau, at time of media availability, said: “Nope, nothing officially. I’ve heard rumours about that but it’d be pretty cool.”
  3. Well it looks like Ryan Johansen has been voted into the breakaway challenge. It's kind of fishy too because when I checked yesterday he only had 13% of the vote and Johnny had 44%. But with the All Star game in Columbus it makes sense to have Johansen take part.http://www.nhl.com/ice/m_blogs.htm?id=36211
  4. Can you post a link confirming this? I have seen it speculated that he will Crosby's replacement but I haven't seen anything confirmed.

Calgary is pushing for the playoffs and they are going to play however they think will give them he best chance to win, if that means going with Ortio while he is hot, then Ramo will watch from the press box.

My guess is that they all get recalled on Monday, and that is why Ortio's spot was filled for the All Star game. The AHL All Star game is on Monday and Calgary plays on Tuesday. Bring them back on Monday to practice with the team and play on Tuesday.

See I find Ramo and Ortio have similar styles, the rely on quickness and being athletic. Where as Hiller is more of blocking goaltender that relies on positioning. With Ramo I find he gets moving around in the net too much and gets out of position too easily, he really needs to calm his game down. With Hiller, I find as long as the defense is protecting the front of the net he is fine. He is generally in the right position to make the save but he lacks a bit of the quickness to make the desperation and post to post saves. Ortio so far seems to be the combination of the two. He plays well positionally and has the athleticism and quickness to make the desperation save. He just needs to gain experience.
  8. Hopefully everyone is voting Gaudreau to be in the Breakaway Challenge in the skills competition. He currently is the leading vote getter with 44% of the votes followed closely by Giroux with 37%.

http://theahl.com/all-star-roster-changes-starters-named-p195898 Interesting note, the AHL put out a press release listing several players that would be unavailable for the All Star game and Ortio wasn't one of them.

I don't agree that Hiller should be the one traded. He is the only goalie we have that has proven he can be a starter in this league. He has never had a season where he has posted a SV% under .910.

Are you saying we should under inflate the pucks, to give our goaltenders the advantage?

It might come down to roster flexibility. When Ramo comes back one of Ortio, Granlund or Shore have to go down.

Hiller is too expensive to be a backup for contending team. My guess is that Gillies is a least 3 years away from NHL duty.

What teams are we going to trade Hiller or Ramo too? I don't see much of a market for Hiller, he has been pretty solid for us but on most playoff teams he is going to be a backup and with another year at $4.5mill I don't see anybody lining up to have him as their backup. Ramo has been ok, but I think there are better options out there if teams are looking for goaltending depth. I think Ramo will walk at the end of the year and either we will see another goaltender brought in or Ortio will be brought up full time.

I don't think it is fair to claim that Ortio is our best goalie based on 2 games. He is our hottest goalie at the moment, but I need to see way more of a track record to name him our best goalie.

  17. Apparently Gaudreau has filed the paperwork to trademark Johnny Hockey.

Ortio posting a shutout last night is encouraging, but I want to see what he can do over a number of games before I am ready to say let's trade Ramo or Hiller. Lots of goalies come up from the AHL and play very well the first few games, but then once video gets around, teams will start to target weaknesses and the goalie starts to cool down. I am not saying that that is going to happen with Ortio, but I just want to see more.

I would be shocked if Ortio wasn't starting tomorrow.
  20. I still wouldn't do it. Kessel is the type pf player that you have to give special treatment too, and that doesn't work with the way this team is being built. I want player who want to win, not just players who like to play hockey. Kessel reminds me in a way of Brett Hull, great goal scroer, but didn't like to practice, didn't like the media, almost had issues with staying in shape. Hull did win two Cups, but he wasn't the leader or counted on to be the main offensive weapon on either of those teams. In Dallas you had Modano and Nieuwendyk, Lehetinen and Carbonneau, who were the leaders of the team and Hull was just allowed to do his thing. Same thing in Detroit where they had guys like Shanahan, Fedorov, Lidstrom, Yzerman, Robitaille, Larionov and Chelios. Hull was surrounded by some of the greatest players of all timeso his deficiencies as a player and a leader were masked by great teammates. Kessel in Calgary would be the best player and looked too, to be the guy. That's not what Kessel is, if you want to have success with Kessel in your lineup he has to be a roe player, not the number one option. IMO bringing Kessel into this team would set the rebuild back, and I am not sure it would get on track while he was on the team.
  21. I am really missing capgeek.com already, what a great website. It is harder to be informed on these discussions on players.

  22. Kessel is a great goal scorer there is no doubt about that, but I wouldn't want him anywhere near this team. First there is the cost, it will take more to land Kessel than what the Senators paid for Bobby Ryan, which was Silverberg (2nd round pick in 2009), Stefan Noesen (1st round pick in 2011) and a 2014 1st round pick (Nick Ritchie). My guess is that it take something like Baertschi, Klimchuk, a 2015 1st and a 2016 1st. Second we will have his cap hit of $8mill for the rest of this season and 7 seasons after that. Which isn't a huge issues except for the fact that he is not known for being in great shape, you have to wonder how long his body will hold up if he refuses to do the necessary work outs. There are some great scorers out there that are more interested in making their money and scoring goals than they are winning, I put Kessel and Ovechkin in that category and I would bet my house that neither will ever win a cup.
  23. I believe Gaudreau and Jooris ended up as roommates.
  24. Check out @AAVickers's Tweet: https://twitter.com/AAVickers/status/533342473997651968?s=09 Apparently rooming with Monahan and Bouma is an option for Gaudreau as well.

I agree. I really thought Ramo would get the start tomorrow. Maybe Hiller has lights out numbers against the 'Yotes.
