  1. I think you could separate the projects, but I think the need for a replacement of McMahon is also there. It's a dump, attendance is down and I don't believe its due to lack of interests, and with newer stadiums in Winnipeg, Regina, Hamilton, and Ottawa, I don't see us hosting a Grey Cup in the near future. Hosting the Grey Cup might not mean anything to the non-football fans, but it does provide a great economic benefit to the city. That said the fact that this has become a dual project is solely the fault of the Flames for not acting soon enough on the arena, instead they purchased the entire cities sports teams and inherited another outdated facility. As supportive as I am for the need of new facilities, I am just too underwhelmed with what has been presented to be fully supportive of a lot of public money going in. For starters, I'd prefer an outdoor football field. I can tolerate freezing in November as long as I can sit outside on a July afternoon. I like the weather elements of watching the game. Secondly, the pictures of the arena are just plain bland compared to renderings of other arenas. What does the concourse look like? What type of amenities will be there? It's just too meh for what will likely be a billion dollar project.
  2. It was Andersson in the prospect tourney, but Smith in preseason. I think Nurse had a target on him because of the beat down of Ras, I remember earlier before the Smith-Nurse bout Bollig had tried to get Nurse to go.
  3. The main problem I have with this as a compliment is that I think a good chunk of his shootout wins he had a 2 goal lead going into the 3rd. So in ways he was generous in giving away points, something you can't do if you're actually in a playoff race. Berra was like a bottom of the rotation starting pitcher, could be outstanding for the first half of the game, but if you leave him in too long there is a good chance he'll get hit hard. 3rd periods were dreadful for him and they seemed like they needed a closer. The fact I just used a baseball comparison for an NHL goalie is all that needs to be said about Berra.
  4. If we did so be it then good for the Avs and good for Berra, but the bottom line is if Allaire can do something with him then its a luxury we never had to begin with. Even Giguere when everyone was crying in 2003 because we gave up on him, people didn't realize he wouldn't have become that here, he was a completely different goalie, and yet such an up and down goalie that I didn't care that we gave up on him because we wound up with something better. Now all we gotta do is try to do what San Jose did with the Kipper pick.
  5. So with all your gloating, are you 100% sure Berra being pulled was a sole indication of his play and not a move to spark the team, as it is common a goalie will get the yank in hopes of igniting the team. That said, I'm not trying to sound like the biggest supporter of Ramo and Berra, but at least I'm getting behind them and hoping for improvements. I'm not rooting for anyones failure just because I like someone else more.
  6. Sure nothing wrong with that, but 2 goalies played 2 different teams one played a team with the reigning MVP and an elite PP and the other played Columbus. I think we give this some time before we call one goalie Jesus and the other terrible.
  7. The last round of cuts was Knight, Reinhart, Ferland and Kanzig. They are at best what you say the others are, no future superstars there and hardly guys that anyone is overly excited about. I'm not disappointed in either, Kanzig is only 18 he needs more time, Knight is straight outta college and he could use some seasoning, Ferland improved drastically in the prospect camp and tourney but was injured in main camp so had nothing to show, and Reinhart also missed too much of camp to really show he deserved to stick. Did you honestly expect them to make it over Stempniak, Stajan, Glencross, Hudler, Cammy?
  8. There is no doubts the attitude around the city towards the team is similar to what it was from '97-'03, Calgary is a bandwagon city and it can't be denied, but we are that way because we have a great number of transplants, a lot of these people came with allegiances to teams they grew up cheering for, but would jump on the Flames bandwagon at the high times and ditch later. Where the situation is a lot better now is that, in the past they had to fight to get season ticket holders, not a problem these days, and corporate sponsorship is a lot better now as the team did a good job at getting long term deals when the on-ice product was better (god forbid KK get any credit). The Flames aren't in the same position as the Oilers who were able to sell the fans on hype. They had a #1 pick, we didn't, they had a World Junior hero, we don't. I think if we had the similar spot the Oilers had where we had individuals to hype there would be more buzz around the city, but I don't want that. The team needs to take their bumps, stockpile assets, and properly allow the youth to develop. Great individuals can put bums in seats, but great teams keep em there.
  9. Why don't you 2 stick to pm's its annoying reading your elementary arguments, or better yet ignore each other.
  10. First off it's only a 4 year deal, consider 3.5 is 3mil less than Redden and less than half of Gomez you could say you'd expect half the player. Stajan was coming off of back to back 50 point years. I can't defend what he's done since, compare him to Gomez look at the production and salary from last year and this and convince me that Stajans deal is worse.
  11. Just saw the Flames lost to the Townsend Tigers again, another sign this thing needs to be blown up!!

LOL. I know, Bourque looked so lazy out there.

    2. DirtyDeeds

      DirtyDeeds

We got room to sign a few of them on trials?

  12. Nope, far from it greatest face ever belongs to this fellow.
  13. I say different era's and different teams. Keep in mind the Flames that year had one player with over 50 points, one defenseman with over 5 goals (and it was below 10), were missing McAmmond and Reinprecht who while healthy were good contributors on offense. Canucks had 5 50 point guys, 4 defensemen with over 5 goals 3 of which missed some significant time. Another thing Iginla might not have dominated a round like Henrik did against the Sharks, but he wasn't really invisible for one either, his worst was 4 points in 6 games vs. Detroit but considering Detroit has had a good history of shutting down top players in the playoffs its really not that bad.
  14. I find Ballard to be the most intriguing part, we've done our whining about Stajan, Hagman, Kotalik and he makes a fair bit more and still has 4 years left. Thats a big price for 8th on the depth chart. Can he rebound or is he just a bad fit on the Canucks blueline?
  15. Yeah I was just wondering how he was recovering, and if he would be ready for the start or miss a few games.
  16. 2 concussions in a short period for Hamhuis, 4 in his career thats a cause for concern. Any word on Edlers return?
  17. Toews and Kane I don't think just showed up waved a magic wand and they started winning they had support. Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Bolland, Byfuglien.
  18. Problem with both those cases is the culture created in those markets. Kovy has defended the fan base and claimed they will come out if they get an owner who actually cares about hockey. In a sense thats huge, all you get out of Red Wing players is praise for the Ilitch family they also rarely lose a player that they want to keep. Even getting paid millions of dollars Detroit still right now doesn't strike me as a city you want to live in right now. Flames players often say great things about the ownership group. I think Edmonton with Katz is a better situation than the mess they had before with the old group. Florida on the other hand I think sent poor messages, I think players had a hard time committing to an organization that showed they didn't want to commit to players who wanted to stay like Luongo.
  19. Hope he can play again. I'm a bit surprised the visor debate hasn't come back up again.
  20. I'm sure derf will come up with something wise to prove the Flames are still far and away the BEST in the world.
  21. ^Could've put up even sicker regular season numbers if he got to a better team faster. Just looking at his stats through the years I find it funny that in his first year in Van he played one more game, and close to 200 more minutes but faced 300 less shots than his last in Florida. His '04 season was pretty incredible 93sv% on over 2,400 shots is just incredible, I still think he was robbed the Vezina that year because his strawberry team.
  22. Well since I gotta explain everything in great detail. '10 Chicago - nobody in top 5 in goals, points, +/-, ppg, gwg, face off %, wins, or sv %. Pit- Malkin and Crosby had big years, nobody else put up 50 points. Detroit in '08 was good in the individual stats, but Anaheim wasn't. That said why were these teams successful, because of contributions from different sources. Chicago had guys like Byfuglien and Bolland score big goals for them, Pittsburgh had guys like Talbot and Staal score when Detroit shut down Crosby and Malkin, Ducks had the Pahlson line that shutdown some of the leagues best lines. As far as the Washington I think I gave you too much credit, I thought you knew your stuff and would realize that half there weapons did nothing in that series. Instead you mention the Ovechkin (who scored 5 goals thats series)doing the same thing as a reason more than the disappearance of guys like Semin, Green, Fleischman and others. Playoff time sees many teams shut down the best players of the opposing teams, the emergence of Kesler puts another target on him. So question is can the bottom 6 take any of the heat off?
  23. Didn't ever really say it didn't matter, all I was getting at before with the don was that being dominant in the individual stats categories was irrelevant to the bigger picture. Um we still got a chance for 4th.
