2010 Winter Olympics

I'll use a line from one of my favourite movies.

"I guess there's only one thing left to do. Win the whole f***ing thing."

I fully expect Canada to challenge for the most medals. And I hope the first Canadian gold on Canadian soil is won early (so it doesn't become a focus) and then won often. :D

I think we will be at least in the top five in total medals won, as well as in gold won. I agree with Barney, the earlier the better.

Also, I'm wondering peoples position on the training camp ... It seems here in Vancouver there's a big uproar over the fact that the orientation camp is in Calgary, when a lot of people think that if the Olympics are here, so should the camp. I personally think that they are reading too much into it, that it's not really that big a deal, and they're making a mountain out of a molehill. Thoughts?

Since Hockey Canada is based out of Calgary, the camp should be here. Just like every other Olympic year or other major international event.

^^

But I think that's the beef. We have an NHL rink and team, so does Vancouver. Since they are the host city, they believe they should have the camp, regardless of where Hockey Canada is.

I'd like to hear what some Vancouverites think on this.

I'm certain Canada will KICK **+!

Our athletes have the best facilities in the world (aka Calgary) to train for the winter Olympics, though the funding is not always there I'm sure they will come up BIG.

As for guestamating medals, I couldn't start cause I'm not even sure what events there are.

As for Hockey, GOLD.

Say, how come it says October 24, 1955? The internet was invented in 1995. Oh my God, you took the DeLoriean back to 1955, and Biff Tannen found out about it, and set it up now he's a billionare making internet porn.

Ok Serious posting time now:

First Point:The Medals are kinda big arn't they and deformed?Did the machine press malfunction? Oh well at least they're complete, unlike the Washer rings of Torino.

Second point: No Olympics is without controversy Canada no exception: With the indigenous protests being banned, and aboriginals claims of human rights abuses (the chant of "no olympics on stolen native land"), environmental damage, and the homeless being allegedly hurdled into gasp homeless shelters. Is this akin to the China games: With the Tibet issue, environmental issues, and the homeless slums being emptied and torn down before the games started?

yes and no, the RCMP however won't lock desenters into gulags, or torture them with Maoist tortures. Yes, because the natives living in Bantustans reserves is a gross human rights abuse, and Canada has tried to assimulate the natives before similar to the Chinese assimulating the Tibetans. The United Nations also condemns out treatment of the Aborginal. (and the RCMP have been "known" to even cause the deaths of a fair number of natives, unwittingly when driving them off into the woods, to walk off their drunkeness in -40 weather.

3. Will Team Canada's Pwn the Podium pay off? I hope so, especially with the possibility of hockey. It would be a shame for the Team USA to get their revenge on our turf ice, as we did in the Salt Lake City Games.

4. The Mascots vs Our polar bears Heidi and Howdy? (although Polar Bears don't exist in Southern Alberta). Heidi Ho, Heidi Ho!

5. Security: A war was started during the Beijing opening. Will something similar happen here? If not this one. Then defiantly the next one, oh yeah there won't be a next one. WW3 starts in 2012, either that or the Cluthulians awaken from their crashed mother ship under the pacific ocean and anime attack us with demons (yes THAT kind). But anime Space chicks with pretty eyes, and goofy smiles, and magical powers will save us, like all Square soft games. I get to play as CID though. No I'M CID!

Although it seems like a thousand years from now, the Winter Olympic games of 2018 are not so far away. And an event such as this needs a huge preparation process to be started real soon.

That’s why the deadline for applications from cities that would like to host this memorable event ended a few days ago.

The three countries whose applications have been received are France, Germany and South Korea. Now the difficult evaluation process begins – up to July 2011 the three candidates will be competing for the jury’s approval. The final decision is yet to be made. But many people predict that South Korea’s Pyeongchang has to work really hard to make its dream happen since the failure of its bids for 2010 and 2014 Olympic Games.

Next year’s Winter Olympic Games will be held in Vancouver in February (the Winter Olympics 2010) and March (the Paralympic Winter Games) and now Canada is preparing for the big event and the huge amount of people that will have to be accommodated and entertained.

The medals for the event to be held in February have already been completed. It was unveiled that they are made with trace amounts of gold, silver and copper reclaimed from discarded electronics. The percentage of recovered metal was small but still organizers boast this is the first time such a practice is being held. Corrine Hunt, the aboriginal artist, who designed the medals, said she tried to depict famous symbols like the Orca whale and the raven in her pieces of art.

The special shaped medals depict the sea and mountain landscape iconic of Vancouver and nearby Whistler. Vancouver will host the ice sports, snowboarding and freestyle skiing, while the Alpine skiing and other sliding and Nordic events will be held at the Whistler resort town.

The whole world awaits the incredible shows that Canada is about to host in a few months so let us all prepare for our favorite sport.

You might still have time to sign up Big Chief. Just go to the Van games website, and register to be a volunteer. It's too late for the olympics, but the paraolympics are equally cool they're being held in march. The olympic village (I'll post photos and the news letter here, if I'm premited), or just the photos of the place, are these nice luxury condo looking things. I'm going to be a spoiled kitty. meeeeeeeeowwwwwwwwwww

You know how i ndyana jones nuked the Fridge? Well We went beyond that.

Overture,

A snowboarder jumps out of no where through the Olympic ring.

A RCMP honor guard raises the flag.

Native leaders are represented in the dignitary box. They welcome the world to the games

4 Giant Haida Gwai totums,  magically emerge from the ground, raises arms palms up welcoming us. Aborginal youth representatives from 4 West Coast nations, welcomes the world. They bang a giant drum. (each nation's symbologly is imprited as a light graphic!)

Other aborginal youths dance traditional magical Native dances, and form Native symbols with their bodies, (ie, Medicen wheel, as AMBIENT native chanting plays, Natives dance and wave to the Visitors, who parade around the Medic en wheel. Very powerful emotions. Words can't explain what the heck I saw, but Indy Nukeing the fridge is a small firecracker!

Lots of lighting graphics super imposed on the audience of Haida Gwan colours, ie the dolphins (similar to the artwork on Salmon boxes). Black and red native art.

A tribute to Canada's great silent north, along with passages of a Canadian author recited, White confetti representing snow, drops, as presumably inuits dance on a ice light graphics, it breaks up, as Dolphis emerge from the ice,

Brian Adams appears to sing the olympic theme song. Irish river dancers pop up, and maple leaf confetti rain down. We bang our imaginary drums (real visitors will get REAL drums), as the Cheer squad leader prompts us to imagin we have drums, magical light wands, etc. We waved banging, nooo wait I lied. We did the "drums"When Team Canada was announded. We clapped to simulate drumming (very much like Harvey the hound bangs to get us fired up like Fire flames of firey fire). "I believe".

A magical tree sacred Night elve (ha ha no but still ha ha), grove, emerges and preformers do balet in the air, on the ground. (BC rainforest)

Sarah McLaughin sings (traditional Irish music) as river dancers dance, Paper maple leafts drop.

Then lighting clouds emerge (we use our "magical" flash lights), to simulate thunder slashes. downward swipes. a Mountain emerges from the center, with Snow boarders, ski jumpers emerging with ropes.

While Skaters (roller bladers), go around and around the Magical mountain" with flashy red and white lights. because it's dark all we see is zippy lines.

We pyro technics blast. And. Joe Canadian "IAM Canadian beer, or a person simlar to him", describes Canada's awesomeness, to background super imposed panaroramic of BC and mountains.

-speeches by the organizers, athliet's oaths, and the approach of the torch, which in this case didn't come in, and the fire pit wasn't there. And the athliets weren't there either, just volunteer stand ins, and we didn't have our drum or our "lighting", (we improvised with Cell phones). nice!

Joni Mitchell sings both sides now (the opera version), as a figure slowly runs through a wheat field, jumping from segment to segment, representing a young farm dude, running and jumping through wheat field.

The REALLY tripy part was, the aboringals though. I don't know the ambient techno, and magical abroginal deities slowly rising from the ground welcoming the world was wow, or them dancing proudly displaying their unique culture to the world.

We walked out of the BC place, and appeared to be Zombies. as they blocked off the streets... Nuckleheads are very friendly people. You have a nice city NFKevin.

--You should have been there when we did the Pseudo team Canada, approach run. It was VERY VERY LOUD AND FUN..... funnnnnnn meowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww purr purr meow happy Cat is Happy.

Well in case you're wondering (Thanks in part to CTV, as they have reminded me the last few days for way too many times), the opening ceremony's Friday. It doesn't seem that long ago when Vancouver was awarded the games.

And what do you guys think of the official song, "I Believe"? Yay or nay?

I hope Canada gets a gold medal win out of the way quickly - because if they don't, it's just going to drag on, and on, and on.

As for "I believe".... I want to poke my ears with a cottonless q-tip every time I hear that damn song. Right up there with "Eh Oh Canada Go" in the realm of fake corporate national spirit.

Anyone disappointed with the Super Bowl in the fact that they showed way too many Olympics commercials during breaks? I mean I think we already know that the Olympics are coming up. We get it CTV. It's just disappointing because I didn't get to see any of the Super Bowl commercials. Those are always entertaining.

Wowie The dress rehersal (note, they didn't show us ALL for the dress rehersal, because they KNOW that some stupid kitty named..... well you know who, and others like him who are excited people with the mind of a silly child, can't keep secrets). so it's just going to be better than what I saw. And that stuff made all my tiny cat hairs stick up.
