Saints coach Payton suspended by NFL for 2012 season

Meting out unprecedented punishment for a crush-for-cash bounty system that targeted key opposing players, the NFL:

  • suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton without pay for next season
  • indefinitely banned the team's former defensive co-ordinator, Gregg Williams
  • fined the Saints $500,000
  • took away their second-round draft picks this year and next

I wonder if after this Canuck fans will think the league was too harsh on them for the Steve Moore thing, only one that really suffered there is Bert. With the Saints many of there bounties went unrewarded they did a number on Favre that NFC championship game but couldn't knock him out. As for the punishments I see them as fair, but would like to see a complete banishment for Williams as it is something he did in Buffalo and Washington.

2 completely different animals... but the word bounty is common here.

one specific incident vs organized ongoing plan of compromising player safety for financial gain and reward.

But the Canucks were fined $250,000 in 2004... that's pretty damn stiff. And if you consider the difference in era and in values of the 2 leagues and franchises, the Saints got a slap on the wrist type of fine relative to the Canucks punishment.

no comparison of course thru the rest of it tho... but that may still be coming in civil form.

Two totally different animals. The Moore inicdent was a single incident, not a program that spanned several seasons. There was also no money invovled from the organization/coaches (to the best of my knowledged) and in the Saints case the coaches were putting money up as well. That makes that far worse IMO, the coaches had direct involvement in setting up, administering, and also funding the program that spaned a couple seasons. That makes it far worse IMO.

But the key difference, and why the Saints got punished so severly, was that when the NFL came knocking to investigate they lied about it and tried to cover it up to the leage office. The NFL had to dig deeper and when they did found out that all the way up to the GM had attempted to cover this up and sweep it under the rug. Once thing Rodger Goddel, and to a point society, tells you that it you lied you can expect to get punishment in spades.
