Sign D. Justin Schultz

He's a Right Handed Defenseman. We need those and he's from Kelowna, so maybe he'd like to play closer to home?
Sign him and Wideman...
JBo, Wideman
Gio, Butler
Brodie, Schultz
Smith
If Schultz can play 2nd pair, great!
He's just coming out of college. If you're expecting him to step right into the NHL, you're thinking wishfully. He'll need at least a year in the minors if he's to develop properly.
As far as I'm concerned he won't sign with us, so why bother? Every team in the league can offer him the same amount of money because there's a rookie salary setup, so he won't sign here for money. And we have no connection to him otherwise. He was born in BC, hence the Canucks rumours. He's good friends with Jake Gardiner, hence the Leafs rumours. We have nothing that sets us apart, we may as well be a faceless team to him.

many believe he is NHL ready, wouldn't hurt to keep the #6 slot open for him, if he shows himself not ready then he could be demoted as finding another 6/7 guy isn't that hard to doHe's just coming out of college. I personally don't think he is ready so I would not leave a spot open for him but would absolutley let him compete for it in camp. Would love to sign Schultz he would be a massive gain for the organization and would be like having two first round picks this year.

by leave a spot I meant for the kids to compete for. have Smith, Wilson, Connelly, etc try and win it.I have to agree that signing him would be difficult, I just cna't see the draw when all other teams can offer him the same money. I guess the Flames could offer him money, close to home and a chance to be on their roster but I still think lots of teams' can do that.

Enough NHL teams think he is ready that I would expect him to play in the NHL next year. He'll sign with a team that makes those intentions clear to him. And he will be looking for a one-way more than money, imho.
We should be that team. Obviously a two-way would be better, but we could sign the guy by taking a bigger leap of faith. We need a blue-chip right-D prospect.
Most of the players mentioned thus for are Left-D, and they will have the same battle with, or without Schultz.
Ie., Wilson, Conelly, Smith.
Normally, I would make the arguement that you hold your prospects back as long as possible for proper development. In this case, the spots for Right-D are wide open in our organization, and offering him strong intentions, or possibly even a one-way, would be something we could offer to him that most other teams couldn't.

He becomes a UFA on July 1st.he is not available because he is with Anaheim
If he was gonna sign with Ana, he would done it already since it would of burned an ELC yr and would of hit RFA status a yr earlier.
The Ducks want him on the team right now... but he hasn't signed.
Considering what his options are... It's clear he's going UFA and taking his talents to South Beach.. or somewhere else other than being a Duck.
Obviously I'm hoping he comes to van...
But can I honestly ask tho.. what kid in their right mind would go to Toronto after watching that organization get publicly thrashed and embarrassed all yr?
Maybe he's been detached from it all yr being in Wisconsin... But best friend is Gardner... He has know exactly what's going on there... And he has a family that's clearly watched it all go down... Seriously do you really think TO is a prime destination for any kid that can pick his spot?

Any kid that grew up in Toronto or surrounding area grew up wanting to play for the leafs. Unless their parents were Canadiens fans. It's the koolaid they drink here, or in the water. Clearly I'm immune to it, being a flames fan in the big smoke. But, i can totally see him preferring to play for the leafs if that was his childhood dream. The decision will defy logic, but most decisions do when based on emotion

Um...he's from Kelowna...not sure who his favourite team was, but it probably wasn't the kind of devotion you're referring to.
Calgary and Van would be natural choices. But, Van is weird. And, Calgary has more opportunity to offer him, imho.
Bottom line...the Flame's prospect situation is better than we give it credit for, but I have to admit...it's still bad. Scary bad, in certain positions, such as Right-Defence.
Because of the position he plays, and his skill/talent level, I hope we do whatever it takes to get this guy signed. We literally have a huge, gaping hole on the right-hand side and we can't afford to be casual about this. Exceptional measures should be taken to sign Schultz, or some other prospect of Schultz's skill and position (which there are very few of). I don't know many others we could acquire without trading away a key player.

if you honestly believe that your opinion means nothing since that can not happen. Schultz is subject to the conditions of an ELC. Meaning the contract must be a 2way contract and has limitations on the amount of money he can be paid. And he will be looking for a one-way more than money, imho.

If you judge everything in life off of an expired cba, then your opinion doesn't matter either as of September 15th.
I'm not apologizing for not memorizing the cba, and I don't hold you to a higher regard for having memorized it. But if it makes you feel better that you did, I am happy for you.
I quite clearly stated that either a one-way OR Intent to give him NHL playing time is what Schultz would be after. Thank you for clarifying that, IF Schultz decides to sign on the old cba rules, it can only be Intent. Of course, he clearly hasn't been in any rush to sign under those rules, has he? Why would that be?
So I suppose you could say that you have corrected a minor part of my arguement, Depending on various decisions that neither of us have any control over.
But quite honestly, I'm here to discuss hockey and Schultz is going to go to the team that wants him the most and offers him the most opportunity. Calgary would be a good fit.

He has to sign under the CBA rules he doesn't have a choice. Given what happened under the last CBA, even if there is a break and a new cba players will be subject to the old CBA until they are granted FA in the new CBA.
Obviously I don't know exactly why he hasn't signed but it could be a fit with the Ducks, it would be he wants leverage to either get more money or a new team. This is basically a Tim Erixon situation again where he is using his leverage to try and get something he wants.

That's how it worked with Blake Wheeler when he refused to sign with Phoenix, bided his time in college & signed as a FA with Boston.Schultz is subject to the conditions of an ELC. Meaning the contract must be a 2way contract and has limitations on the amount of money he can be paid.
A very similar situation.
Matt Read, on the other hand, was never drafted & the 1 way was his reason for choosing the Flyers over other offers. That might be where jjgallow got that idea.

Matt Read is also older, he was 25 when his contract started so he did not have to sign an ELCThat's how it worked with Blake Wheeler when he refused to sign with Phoenix, bided his time in college & signed as a FA with Boston.
