Lots of names missing.

Baertschi, Monahan, Ortio, Reinhart, Granlund, Knight, and Ramage are considered full time pros and don't have to attend.

Poirier and Ferland will be there but won't play as they are injured.

Rafikov wwasn't able to get a visa in time.

Hanowski is an RFA.

Too bad for fans as those are some pretty big names.

Outside of the obvious players like Gaudreau and Bennett I'm anxious to see how the following players have improved.

Keegan Kanzig - The one knock on him has been his skating.  I'll be interested to see how he has improved.  I think with his size he could be a very good stay at home D man and be a very punishing player to play against.

Mark Jankowski - To me here's a guy who just hasn't stepped up his game.  If we believe the hype that we were spoon-fed by Feaster, Jankowski should have been tearing it up by now but he's not.  In 34 games with Providence College he managed only 7g and 11a.  I think this is the year we part ways with him personally.

Patrick Sieloff - Having lost most of last season I'm not sure how in shape he will be for the development camp.  At this point I still see him as a year away from challenging for a roster spot with the big club.

I agree with your list. I am also curious to see David Wolf. Love to see what we have in this guy.

He should be pretty dominant given his age, size, and experience.

Kanzig - His last year was much improved, and I think his skating wasn't that bad even last camp.

Janko - Still a young player adapting to his frame; you don't give up on a player like that.

Seilof - He seems to be a man driven, so I believe he will come into camp in top shape.

Some guys I will be interested to see updates on:

Gilmour - is he worth keeping track of or a bust so far?

Roy - I think he may surprise this year.

Agostino - This guy should be a sniper, but haven't seen that confidence yet.

Klimchuk - Underated here, so I wonder what he truly brings.

AOM - Rated high in the draft, but fell so far.  Is he a Seilof type?

Thinking about hitting an A & B skill development session and maybe the A-B scrimmage.

Anyone else?

Of the non-Flames prospects I am curious about Jason Fram, 19 years RH Defenseman, 6'/194lbs. Put up 57 points in 72 games last year with Spokane.

I am excited to see Jankowski as well, but I think he us unfairly being judged on just stats on a very defensive oriented team. I think he has the tools to be a very good NHL player.

Hopefully they will have videos of the scrimmages on the main site as I have to work those days.

Really, I can't wait to see a few things:

  • Smith and Kanzig standing side by side....  then Gaudreau between them.
  • Gaudreau being centered by Bennett
  • Seiloff actually skating since he's had a rough year.
  • Jankowski.  He's underrated by so many fans because of their disdain for Feaster, and for where he was picked.  None of which are his fault.  He's got sick hands, and is such a smooth skater.
  • A good look at the 2014 draft class as a whole.
  • A good look at McDonald.
  • See what Wolf is made of.

I knew I left someone off my list when I posted it.

I too am interested to see what he brings to the Flames.  I am a little leary though because he's another unknown project from the Euro ranks and has never played the North American game.  That being said though, he seems to have the fight and grit that is required to be successful in this league.  Should be interesting to say the least.

I haven't been around here in quite a while with life getting busy and all but I have a moment to breathe so thought I would whip up some additional info from the invitees the black bolded are the Invites, Red are Flames property most of us have seen to some degree and the green are the recent draft picks.

They seem to have brought in alot of meat to this camp from ages 18 - 25 being the oldest I don't know much personally of them but looking at them on paper only a few of the invitees stick out to me I bolded them in dark blue

Brendan Bell The Ottawa 67's captain on a bottom dweller team in the OHL still put up decent numbers and has the size factor.

Jason Fram from the Spokane Chiefs a RH shot D man which we all know are always in demand still quite young at 19 and put up good numbers.

Lukas Zejdl from HC Slavia Praha a mens czech leauge third on the team in pts, Massive kid, Versatile LW/RW abilities, for a big guy coming to the smaller ice might actually benefit him.

As for Flames property I think it's safe to say we are all anxious to see what the new blood in this past Draft it all about, and for the returnees, It will be nice to see how Janko has improved, Gaudreau as always is just fun to watch, Kanzig and Harrison I will also look forward to seeing as they were quite the surprise in last years camp going gungho and standing out hopefully they can repeat that.

Actually getting a chance to see Klimchuk as he was hurt last year, Sieloff will be nice to just see on the ice again injury free, and David Wolf all the talk about the truculent power forward from Germany got me wanting to see what he's about!!

Thinking about hitting an A & B skill development session and maybe the A-B scrimmage.

Anyone else?

I am going to try for both scrimmage games 7th and 9th.

I'll rely on reports from those of you that attend but hope you give fairly detailed posts about who impressed you & the flipside of who is a waste of space.

I am curious about certain players but I figure 1st hand observances be they pro, con or just neutral will let me read between the lines. Those not mentioned can say as much about their game as those impressing or not.

What I did last year at the games; I got a list of the players and #'s.

If a player made a good play, move, check, save etc. I placed a check mark beside their name

If they made a excellent play they received 2 check marks

A bonehead or bad play they got an X.

At the end of the games I tallied them up with an x negating a check mark.

Last year the player with the most check marks was Josh Jorris but his x's brought his total below both Sven and Monahan.

Not sure how this really helps in determining a players worth but it still gives you an idea how they participated.

The Flames just tweeted that Gillies, Jankowski, Poirier and Hathaway won't be taking part in on ice activities for the development camp.

Not surprised with Poirier, he had a shoulder injury, more important for him to get healthy for main camp.

Disappointed that we won't get to see Jankowski and Gillies, especially since they won't be at the other camps, but if they have injuries, better to get them healthy and ready for their college season as big things are expected of both of them this year.

Went to the first session this morning which was group b. My thoughts:

On the 2014 draft class:

Bennett is such an effortless skater. I wouldn't say he looked great out there today but just how effortless he was moving around the ice at high speed is impressive. Quick release on his wrist shot as well. One on one skills weren't there today but that's not a big deal.

Hunter smith is not a bad skater for his size but will need to improve. His top end speed is fine and he'll keep up but his acceleration and agility need to get better but they can. Fought the puck a Iittke so didn't get a great look at his hands but around the net he showed a bit of touch.

Brandon Hickley is a real impressive skater backwards and front. He was the only dman that could conssistantly stick with forwards when he started backwards on one on one drills. He is fiesty as well and isn't afraid to get a stick or a body on someone in the d zone. Starting to really like this pick.

Eric Roy might actually be worth trying at forward. He's very impressive on he rush and has great accuracy to his wrist shot but he just looks so uncomfortable in the defensive zone. Almost like he is constantly thinking of what to do next.

Patrick Seiloff is back to his old self. He wore a no contact jersey and he still took an opportunity to lay someone out along the boards, the kid just loves contact. Loves it so much he often takes himself out of position but that is workable. Showed a bit of offence too with a couple of nice writ shots in close.

Tim Harrison didn't impress me as much as he did last year.

John Gaudrea was as impressive as ever and easily the best player on the ice. These things are formalities for him now he just needs to start making the transition.

David wolf wasn't overly impressive. Couple of decent moves around the be he looked like he was really sucking wind so onto sure if just wasn't his day or not but he was the only prospect who seemed to be struggling.

Brett Kulak continues to develop well. Nothing of his game really jumps out or impresses you but he is very smart and just gets it done.

Our of the tryouts only two stuck out and the rest were pretty unimpressive.

Casey Bailey was excellent on the two on twos and put on a bit of a shot. Great one on one skills including a toe drag and a deke right through a dman but he also finished those plays.

Zach Tolkien was a rh dman who I liked. Firsty player but a smart one as well who played the one on ones and two on ones quit well.

Edit: jason Fram was also quite impressive. RH shot, smoothie skater and smart in the d zone.

I have to wonder if Wolf getting used to the altitude might be a factor...   Hamburg has an elevation of 16m as compared to Calgary being at 1045m...

There also is no ice in Germany in the summer, so has not skated since he was done with the Freezers.

Well I took in today's scrimmage.

Sooooo worth the price of admission. Seeing  the full arena and all the future Flames Fans made me proud to be a strong supporter.

Cowboy hats off to the Flames Org.

This is what I saw and some of my conclusions.

Surprises!!

Zach Tolkinen 80

Wow Zach was a surprise a good solid rd prospect. Passed and moved the puck well out of his zone. Also seemed comfortable out there, but it could be he is quite a bit older. I think a look at our farm system might be worthwhile.

David Wolf 45

There's another Man playing with boys. When I saw him on the ice he worked HARD. He seemed to have good smarts and quarterbacked the lines he played on. He might never be a 1st or 2nd liner but I am excited about him on our club. Hopefully this year.

Keegan Kanzig 73

If his skating improves next year as much as it did this year We are in for a treat.

The NO Suprises!

John Gaudreau 53

Unarguably the best player on the ice. Words like dominates, controls, sets the play come to mind. He can thread the needle with a pass and seems to always be in position to accept one. The flames will have a difficult time in finding equals to complement him.

Sam Bennet 63

Sam will be a good one. One of the few that was always ready for that JG pass. (look at the highlights of the first goal) Unfortunately (in my opinion) not till next year. Needs a little more skating, balance, and strength.

Mason McDonald 72

OK OK OK that is why he was taken 34th. Super fast reflexes and sees the play well.

Disappointments!

Hunter Smith 71

Looks like he just got a new pair of skates and they are not worn in yet. Big kid but needs work.

Heh, kinda cool.

My oldest son is visiting nana in Calgary and went to today's development camp where he met Treliving, Hartley, Gelinas, Gaudreau, Bennett, and some other prospects. The Flames media team decided to showcase him on twitter.  I think I'm more excited than he was.  :D
