Realistic Trade suggestions for improvement

For me, I was always upset about the Hamilton deal. We could’ve had Barzal as that elusive right shot C right now. And maybe the guy to play with Bennett, or even Gaudreau and Monahan?

i guess our D would be in shambles though.

One look up North should show you that the old adage that you build a team from the net out is so true.  I can not fault BT for trying to follow that adage. He tried to build from the net with the Elliott and Johnson pickups.. They just fell short.

Hamilton and Hamonic are the building out part. He did not do enough research or homework on Hamilton .. or so it appears. Can't blame him for the pickups other than he picked wrong players but did pick the right position.

What if the "elite" part is simply more about Gio and less about Hamilton? Hamilton was an atrocity before he paired with Gio.

Brodie became the atrocity without him.

Hamilton was excellent in Boston prior to coming to Calgary.

It was a major trade, career defining for BT. It was aggressive but showed savvy on BT's part, at the time the Bruins looked like they got fleeced on the deal. BT was a new GM who saw an opportunity to land a cornerstone RHS D man to his core and took a shot. For me it's hard to fault him on that one...however he's completely on the hook for Hamonic, GG and Brouwer!

He took a shot, it didn't work out as well as expected, now he's moved on with another strong trade.

Playing with Chara...

And managed to improve Charas numbers. Chara was better with hamilton then others.

Can Hamilton be a true number 1 dman? We'll see. . But to try and insinuate he's been carried for his career is simply not factual.

I'm not implying anything, but if you're focusing on Corsi numbers, well, they don't really mean that much, as we've seen.....

Even after getting Lindholm I would still check in on Krejci. He would give us another RHS C for faceoffs.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm

Bennett-Krejci-Tkachuk

Jankowski-Backlund-Frolik

That has the looks of a very good and competitive top 9. You could roll 3 lines really easily and not worry about scoring.

Holzer would make for a pretty good 7th defenseman. He is big, physical, RHS. If we do move Stone it would be nice to have another depth RHS, especially after Hamilton left, we would be down to Hamonic and Andersson with RHS. Holzer is due to make 900k next year so his salary comes in at the right price. If it doesn't work just put him back on waivers.

I just get the feeling that Treliving is going to be swinging for the fences. I think he isn't going to risk missing the playoffs again, probably because his job would be on the line if they miss again. Also I think it is time for this core to start winning.

Now I don't know if swinging for the fences means going after a JVR, Neal or Stastny, or going back into the trade market for a guy like Skinner (the reports are that he has already turned down a couple trades with his NMC, which I can't see making Tom Dundon too happy), Pacioretty or a Krejci.

I think with the Hanifin/Lindholm trade we got two pieces that will help us for a long time and are young, so I think we can go for an older piece to help the core along.

I'd much rather go after a young, great piece than an old, great piece.  Now that we've got a top RW/RHS winger/Centre and another top4 D, which were both keys this off-season,  what is really left to do, and who needs to go?  I'd think BT would be pretty happy atm and most the remaining deals will be smaller moves.

Word is that Minny is shopping a roster player on the terms that a team takes back Tyler Ennis, have to wonder then what the cost of someone like Coyle or Nino (2 guys this board loves) would be in a deal like that. It is a bit of a head scratcher, I think Ennis is only signed for one more season but how good would either of those guys look?

Jh/Mony/El Nino

Chucky/Backs/Lindholm

Benny/Janks/Frolik

And if it's Coyle push every one on the right up a spot and play him with Benny and Janks

Trade Brodie and Frolik to MINN for Dumba RHS-RD and Coyle RW

Why would Minny ever consider trading Dumba?  He's younger and already scoring more than Hammy was.

Which is incorrect. First of all analytics is not just Corsi, and second the correlation between analytical numbers and team and player success if still pretty good, Not perfect, but no stat is. Just because the Flames were an outlier, doesn't dismiss the use of a statistic.

16. There was Western Canadian interest in Jason Zucker. I asked if that meant Calgary, Edmonton and/or Vancouver, and was told, “Yes.” God only knows if that referred to one, two, or all three of them.

From Friedman. Please let that be Calgary, Zucker is a really good hockey player. Checks a lot of boxes. only concern would be he's an RFA coming off a major season. I don't think it was a fluke but he'll want to get paid.

I'd rather Matt Calvert though... What kind of money is Zucker looking for?

I haven't heard. I would assume alot as he did pot 30 goals this year. Probably would start with a 6 i'd imagine, but he may also want Evander Kane' deal.

I'm not a huge fan of Calvert personally. I get he's "free" but I don't think he gives you near the talent/production that Zucker does. I'd prefer the Flames aim higher than Calvert.

$7-mil?  More money than Johnny and Mony, no thanks.

Calvert is free, hopefully $2-mil and can push Tkachuk up into the top 6.  But man, looking at salaries, Calvert might get $4-mil.  I guess thats the price for a 2nd/3rd line PK specialist?

I woudln't give him the Kane deal either but I also think you may get him closer to 6 mill which I would give him in a heartbeat. He's a top line talent IMO and can play either wing.

Calvert is free but honestly I think Bennett is the better player., at worth they are similar. I wouldn't bring in Calvert at the expense of working with Bennett. I'd probably even look at Mangiapane as a 3rd line option before Calvert. Nothing against him, I just don't like the idea of more money to bottom 6 guys because I agree with you salaries are on their way up again.

Duclair wasn't qualified by Chicago, any interest there? If be willing to bring him in at league minimum if a trade doesn't materialise

Nope.  This is the third team to give up on him, and he is only 22.  Something isn’t right there.  He’s also three seasons removed from his only good season.
