Anaheim's an NHL team too?

That was not at all made clear on Disney Plus

This is a very cringe worthy contract for the Oilers. What a mistake they made going short term with him a couple of years ago only to hand him this type of deal.

It's incredible how quickly they blew through their flexibility with poor deals

9.25??? WOW. If they went 5 yrs, would it be $12mil per?? Holy crap, Holland is on the loose destroying another team.

Too late.

Next season $73m committed to 8F, 6D and Mike Smith.

$7.8m projected cap space that doesn't take into account current deal due for Yamamoto.

And next deal for Puljujarvi.

And a new starter.

And 5F and 1D.

Capmaster Kenny strikes again.

the absurd part about this is that it's not their worst contract

They are pretty well positioned for the future:

McD for 5 more years.

Draisaitl and Ceci for 4 more.

Nurse for 9 more years.

Nuge for 8 more years.

Hyman for 7 more.

That's almost a starting lineup secured for 4 years or longer.

I can't tell if you're joking or not   lol

I only see one definite starting lineup player there, McD.    Draisaitl I am not convinced would succeed off of a McD led team.  But sure he's getting the job done.  Maybe Nurse, it's hard to tell because McD makes everyone around him look so much better.

Nuge, Hyman, Ceci don't belong on any starting lineup anywhere in the NHL.

Isbad.

Something tells me they'll have cap space freed up soon enough though...when McD has had enough and walks.

Supposedly Nurse was looking for $8m x 7 years.

Not entirely sure when they could extend him, I assume around the same time as Jones re-signed.

I don't consider Nurse to be a top 5 in the NHL.

He scores pretty well playing top 2 minutes with McD and Draisaitl.

He's no Makar.

Only 5 assists in 21 playoffs games.

Ras had 4g and 4a in 15 playoff games.

This is Hall and Eberle all over again, except a lot older.

Unless Nuge and Hyman can help take this team to another level, they will get run out of town.

Draisaitl has to show he is more than a winger for McD and just a faceoff specialist.

Their best all round D-man is an afterthought (Klefbom).

Not only Edmonton, but the whole league’s  salary structure. WTF! How many D are going to be like, “Nurse got this… I am a lot better than that guy!”

not saying his bad, but he is not a #1D

i was thinking he’d be a 4.5- 5.5 per year.

I guess when the oilers heard flat cap, they wanted to flatten it even more with heavier contracts?

Well, he's on his 4th deal.

ELC - normal

18/19-19/20 - $3.2m

20/21-21/22 - $5.6m

They made the mistake twice of not locking him up when he was worth less (or worthless).

I don't agree with him getting that much, but that's how it works if you put a player out to score.

Nurse is basically a master class is how you don’t negotiate a contact. They go short term on him because he hadn’t broken out yet and by going short term then walk him right to ufa. Then, with one year left, they back him with a long term deal after a breakout seasons where there is a bunch of data that shows last year is a bit of a fluke and not something sustainable. There was no reason to do this contract now why not wait and see what happens his season, was he really going to up his value?

For an experienced GM Holland sure seems to make a lot of rookie mistakes.

I like Nurse, but wow that's a scary contract for the Oilers.

Nurse is a steady-eddy defender, he is coming off a year where he had a shooting percentage of 10.4, his career shooting percentage is 4.9.

He's a good player, but shouldn't be compensated as the 5th highest paid D in 22/23. A higher AAV than Norris winner Roman Josi ans more than Pietrangelo and Hamilton Crazy to see the ways EDM has allocated their cap space, because in UFA, nobody was going to offer Nurse 9.25.

They did such good work to lock RNH up for below market value, only for it to be undone by the Nurse extension

What is the plan?  Buyout Neal, sign Nuge, get Kieth, lose Larsson, trade Bear, sign Hyman, Barrie and Ceci.

Goalie situation not resolved.

Nuge and Hyman won't age well after about 4 years.

Get out of cap hell only to get back into it worse.

This year they are banking on Klefbom not playing a single game.

Won't be cap compliant on day 1 without moving him to LTIR.

This is the easy year.

Next year Nurse's deal kicks in plus something for Puljujarvi.

The folks on the Oilers MB are not happy with Nurse's new contract.

Want a real laugh?  Read the Kool-aid drinkers on ON.

They mostly seem happy that Kenny has built a contender and locked up one of the best D in the league.

None seem to understand cap constraints.

that's just amazing.   I got to give some respect though, no matter how bad it gets some people still stay true.  them some good drugs.

y'all know when you have the worst defence in the league the best thing to do is give them a massive pay raise.

Well, they are an interesting team to watch how they operate.

No matter how bad a team they have, they still manage to find teams to take their garbage.

Koskinen and Neal are the first ones they can't seem to find a sucker to take.

And they are going to need help.

They have to get rid of Kassian.

Not to afford just Nurse, but to pay for another short term deal that they bridged.

Puljujarvi.

By playing him with McDavid and Draisaitl and giving him prime PP time, he's looking more like a 1st rounder.

They paid him like a depth player and he would be stupid to want anything less than $5m.

Young guys get big bucks.

Old men like Nuge get half.

Gymnastics GIF

Button says 150 points possible with Hyman.

Then again, he was at that clip this past year anyway.

Surprised they havesn't started talking about breaking Gretzky's single season records.

Here's the kicker; he will play 24 minutes a night, including about 40% spent with Draisaitl.

Whatever his total is for the year, his and DRaisaitl's scoring will account for over 50% of the scoring.

How about that 3rd line?

An AHL tweener at this point with zero goals to date, a new guy that scored in Carolina pretty well and Kassian.

This is the depth that they have up front?

Yeah, I know about all these future stars they have in Bakersfield.

Nothing impressive has come from there.

Yup but it's all thanks to Hyman.

I'm not even sure why people give McDavid any credit.

Exactly.  And it's so good to see the Oilers focusing on what matters most....regular season point totals.

Well Capmaster Kenny said that they needed to do a stepped approach to being a contender:

1) Bring in a true starter

2) Need some experienced "greaybeards"

3) Improve forward depth

#1 - failure, did not buy out Koskinen, focused on Hyman over any available goalie

#2 - Keith, is that a win at $5.9m?

#3 - Foegele and Ryan, lost Khaira and Kahun (most likely - not qualified)

CAR fans are laughing at getting Bear for a guy unable to take a step in CAR.  Described as low hockey IQ, poor finishing, bad hands.

In return they get a raw D-man that can pass and defend.

Ryan was a win for them... two years ago.  I liked the player he was, and he's still better than what they have ready to play at C, but he's not a solution.

Their depth is putrid past the top 6 - McD, Drai, Nuge, Hyman, Puljujarvi.

Yamamoto without Draisaitl can't finish.

Foegele on a third line with McLeod and Kassian is going to score about 3 goals.
