That should be a tripping penalty there on the trip on Ryan, it doesn't matter if you get puck first, Nieto tripped Ryan.

Yep. They changed that rule a while ago. Used to be ok if you get the puck first, now if the player gets knocked over it’s a penalty regardless.

I have liked Kylington's ability to recover tonight. I don't like the fact that he keeps getting into positions where he has to recover a lot.

Can we stop with the blind drop passes already? Let's start making the simple plays on a regular basis first.

A pretty obvious ofside was missed on MacKinnon.

It lead to a minute of zone time.

Yeah, the refs went from calling everything to not calling anything.

Like seeing Kylington getting shifts at this point of the game. Peters sticking with him.

I'm chalking this up as a Flames opening night loss, to go with every other one in too many years.

Make me wrong guys.

Yeah, I'm not as worried with his play tonight.

He's been recovering nicely.

My concern is why does he have to recover so much.

PK the difference. That’s going to be a problem if the flames don’t fix it and change up what they are doing. It sucks.

Outside of that, lots to like.

Bad pinch by Brodie at the end there.

It was the wrong time to take that risk on a puck bounce when he had an option for a safer play...   He just can't let the puck get by him like that with an empty net...

Overall it was a pretty good game by the Flames. It’s early but you can see we’re going to be a good team this year. Remember how discombobulated the team was at the season start under Gully? 40+shots against..🤮

I think that was the right play by Brodie. Donskoi goes by him standing still if he doesn’t try and make a play. Risk worth taking imo. Gotta try and keep the puck in the zone down and a goal

Need to work on their breakouts. Need to see more of the defense leading the breakout.

I get that, but then again Hamonic made a lot of bad passes that went 5 feet to an AVS player too.

Brodie's pinch was a momentum killer, but it wasn;t on him.

That play fizzled out before it came to him.

I'll say this, better to lose to the AVS in game one than VAN or shut out by EDM.

On another note, Czarnik maybe should have been left off and Rieder put in?

At least he kills penalties and isn;t a shrimp compare to AVS D-men.

Bwtween the two players in pre-season, they were neck and neck.

Tie goes to the guy with a two year deal.

I hope this game is the game tape reviewed by the ref supervisor.

It was so bad I can;t even say anything positive about them.

You'd think this was the game following a line brawl and the refs wanted to send a message.

Message received, you suck.

Not a bad first game, but tough to win when you’re chasing for 55 minutes.

Rittich was good, no issue between the pipes tonight.

Officiating bothered me, no way there should be 10 calls in an NHL game... but I digress

My thoughts on the game (understanding it's game 1),

Good,

- Giordano still has it

- Rittich made some great saves.  Looked poised and unrattled

- D was jumping up on the play constantly

- We were a couple posts away from stealing this game.  Missed 2-on-1 and Monahan breakaway

- During the playoffs, we had no answer to the Avs big D, Johnson, Zadorov, and Cole punished us.  We answered that with Lucic today.

- Lucic is slow but was still able to get involved in the play.  Already having a bigger impact than Neal did for us last season.

- PP had some good looks

Bad,

- 5 on 5 wasn't great.  Only able to sustain offensive pressure late in the 3rd period.  The ice felt tilted against us tonight.

- We aren't fast enough to play our game against the Avs.

- Our PK still fails to stop the Avs PP

- Secondary threats were almost absent.  The "3rd and 4th" lines were mostly invisible, really missing Hathaway more than i thought.

Ugly,

- Why was that high stick goal (by Landeskog in center ice) not reviewed?

- Why so many penalties?  There was no flow to the game.

- Kadri looked really good, wish we made that Brodie trade for him.

The ice must have been bad.  There was a problem with it after the intermission.

Pucks jumping.

Backlund line was out of sync.

Tkachuk needed at least another game to be ready and Backlund is nursing something.

The first and second was so messed up by penalties there was no flow and lines got jumbled.

Czarnik was fast, but he must think the boards are made of sponge.

Mangiapane finding his game, but he was getting held like there was no tomorrow.

Johnny had a few bad pklays but looks like he will get to 100 this year.

Gio was young and fresh.

Ras with a post.  Skayed in just a step too far.

Bennett was really good.

Too bad a goal gets scored by an obvious high stick.

They review a possible off-side but won;t even talk about the high stick?

Lame.

Worst crew I've seen in awhile.

Bad calls and bad line calls.

Missed ones and blown dead on others.

But that PK.

Very little relief during 2 minutes.

The PP was effective if a little too predictable.

The empty net setup was great, but they didn;t get anyone fresh in there afetr sustained preddure.

They were barely moring by the end of it.

I Dont say this much tonight wasnt the refs as much as the players imo Yes some of the penalties but If you give the Ref a Reason to call a penalty he is gonna call it..

if your the flames Dont put yourself in the position that your gonna get called for a penalty cause when you take the ammount we took that is why we lost the game

-Top line was fine. Struggled five in five at times, but they don't match up with Colorados big line

- The 3M line was crap across the board. Frolik was really bad.

- The third line was a pleasent surprise. Both Lucic and Bennett had good games and Ryan is usually solid

-Top pairing was good

-Middle pairing struggled a bit, but I am not worried

-Kylington didn't look good.

-Rittich was strong

-The game was terrible to watch due to the officiating. I felt like I was watching a Bantam 4 game where anybody that fell drew a penalty while actual infractions didn't get called.

-The Flames can't blame the penalties. They got two goals on weak calls. They just started slow and couldn't handle the Colorado speed outside of half of the second period.
