Playoffs 2020 - Flames Lineup

Recommended Posts

Probably overused in regular season, but the slate is clean.

What are your suggested lines and pairs?

I'm not too keen on reuniting Hanifina and Hamonic.

And I'm a little betwixt on the 3rd and 4th lines.

For me right now, I think:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm

Mangapane-Backlund-Tkachuk

Lucic-Bennett-Dube

Rieder-Janko-Ryan

Gio-Brodie

Hanifin-Ras

Gustafsson-Hamonic

I could be convinced to slot Lindholm on line 2.

Maybe even put a guy like Quine on the 4th line, since he was good in the playoffs before.

It's very possible that they do move Bennett to #3C, but it is Ward we are talking about.

There would have to be a very good camp where he stands out in that spot.

Alas, we will probably get a heaping helping of Hanifin-Hamonic.

And Hamonic playing on the PK.

But I suppose Hammer is at least able to move guys from the crease.

Not said above buy I would really like to see Kylngton with Hamonic.

Kylington was as capable as Gustafsson or Forbort.

And he's easily a better skater.

Would be less getting caught up the ice on offense.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm

Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane

Lucic-Ryan-Dube

Rieder-Jankowski-Bennett

Giordano-Brodie

Hanifin-Andersson

Gustafsson-Hamonic

Rittich starts Game 1

Talbot

Extras- Stone, Kylington, Forbort, Yelesin, Valimaki, Phillips, Gawdin, Czarnik, Quine, Rinaldo

Essentially the lines we saw in the regular season. Once camp opens, it's a sprint, no real time to tinker. Go with what you know.

Well I would agree except for one thing.

You can't go into the playoffs as a one trick pony.

We've done that and paid deatly.

You have to have at least two pairs that you can alternate a player/players from.

We are going to have Gaudreau/Monahan face one of two lines (because Ward).

If they are held pointlss for a single game, you need to be able to adapt.

I think you may find that Mangiapane is shining while Lindhom is struggling.

That happens and you have to try him on the top line.

Spread the wealth.

Mine is similar to Brewcrew but Bennett on LW and Harmonic is put back with Hanifin and which leaves RS Gust with brodie.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm

Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane

Lucic-Ryan-Dube

Bennett-Jankowski-Rieder

Giordano-Andersson

Brodie-Gustafsson

Hanifin-Hamonic

Rittich starts Game 1

Talbot

Same update as you Jtech, with a small quote about Valimaki. Nothing surprising as it's already been out there for a while.

Interesting list.

Quine had a decent playoffs a few years back.

Phillips and Gawdin are guys I would consider for 4th line spot duty, but who knows.

Czarnik is there, but he didn't even get a callup so I don't know they would put him in.

i;d do bennett/jankowski/dube as third line.. use lucic and tyan on fourth line with whoever they decide to insert on a game to game basis,, whether it's reider or whoever..and  i'd leave the top 6 alone.. just move them amongst each other .. you know.. so as not to hurt their feelings too much.. the defense i'd use would  be gio/valamaki.. Anderson/ kylington.. and play 2 of brodie/hamonic/hanafin together

They are not going to risk Valimaki for a playoff game.

For one thing it counts towards having to protect him in the expansion draft.

For another, they have way too many choices to go there.

As for Bennett and Janko together, that hasn't worked out.

Bennett is better on the dot, and they struggle defensively together.

Keeping Janko and Ryan together helps that in both ways.

Yeah I think it would be a poor management decision to use Valimaki.

Coming off a major injury

No games at all during the season

Lose a protection spot in the Seattle sweepstakes

He would have to have one really good camp to get Tre to use him.

Considering that BT gave up two draft picks to have help on LD, I think the chances are even more slim.

Any thoughts about some of the farm hands being able to show they belong in the play-in round?

Some guys that have really stepped up this year:

Phillips

Gawdin

Ruzicka

Phillips could be interesting.  He looks to have figured out the pro game.

Gawdin is a depth C/RW.

Ruzicka is a wild card.

Has stepped up his game.

The bigger question is who doesn't get the games.  Gustufsson, Forbort, Stone, Kylington, Rieder, Janko, Rinaldo, and possibly Dube.

Lot of blueline depth, but very little on RD.

I think Gawdin has a chance, he’s the closest to NHL ready. Maybe Phillips too if anyone opts out or there’s an injury. Ruzicka is interesting but I think he’s there as a bit of pat on the back for a good rookie season

D probably look like

Gio-Brodie

Hanifin-Andersson

Gustafsson-Hamonic

Bottom 6 could go a number of ways

Lucic-Ryan-Dube will be a line

Rieder-Jankowski-Bennett might be the other

I like your D pairs.
I think the bottom 6 will probably look the same as coaches don’t like to reinvent the wheel so late. But I think @travel_dude has a good idea for his bottom 6 lines by putting Lucic with different style players, and his possible use on the PP. The style of play doesn’t match him with Ryan. They do play like they’re always trying though, so I think the coach doesn’t break them up.

honestly I feel a quarter of the team plays to not make mistakes, another quarter has motivational issues, another quarter tries hard, and the last quarter is inconsistent offensively but is good at shutting down the other team’s bests.

I'm thinking that Ward has to throw out the book and go with his gut.

Huska knows what Kylington can do,

And the worst possible thing the Flames do is play it safe.

Bold decisions.

PP not working, move Tkachuk to PP2 and Lucic to PP1.

Instantly, you have the M-M connection.

You could even have the 3M there.

Bottom line looks lost, try some fresh guys.

Give Phillips 10 minutes and see what he does.

Maybe put Gawdin as a spare C on Bennett's line.

4th line of Dube-Janko-Phillips.

Maybe as good a time as any to bring this one back to life.  By the time we get to the actual playoff games, we will have a more definitive set of lines.  For now, I'm just speculating on what we will see opening night:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm

Mangapane-Backlund-Tkachuk

Lucic-Bennett-Dube

Quine-Ryan-Rieder

Gio-Brodie

Hanifin-Ras

Gustafsson-Forbort

I only included Quine because I feel that Ryan will play C, and that Bennett should remain on the 3rd line.  Playoff Bennett should be playing 3rd line minutes at worst.

If they decided to keep Janko, then slide Rieder to LW and have Janko and Ryan split draws.  I'm also just penciling in Quine due to his playoff experience.  He has to be one of the 12 best to keep that spot.  No margin for error.

I think this is about as good a line up as we can do. I might swap Quine and Janko, but that’s about it. I would also be tempted to move bennett up with Tkachuk and Backs since he does tend to bring it for the playoffs, but Mang was solid to round out the season.

I feel a bit bad for saying this, but I like the looks of that d-squad without Hamonic.

I will be honest.  I prefer we have a 3rd line going with Bennett over playing him with Tkachuk.

Mangiapane was one of the most efficient scorers, and keeping him with Backlund will pay dividends.

I expect using Bennett allows Lucic to be more of a net-front presence.

Yes, Bennett scores within two feet, but he gets called off more times than not.

Lucic gets in the legal space and you can't move him.

The second line is going to be key to winning.

The top lines of each team may just cancel each other out.

Knowing Ward tends to go power vs power, you will probably see a lot of Monahan vs Schefeile.

Last year the top line was overwhelmed, but pretty much skated to a draw 5v5.

Backlund had a much harder time of it.  Him and Tkachuk.

If they are using Bennett as a placeholder, it's frustrating. It would make sense to just replace Ryan with Gawdin if that is the case.

Maybe it's just me, but I think they are keeping Ryan as being a rover.  Play him in the lineup depending on how the lines are working.

It makes sense that if Bennett is playing well there, then you don't shift him when Ryan comes back.

Rinaldo has his place on a roster, but I don't feel he was a positive enough influence to keep him in the lineup.

Swap Janko with Ryan and this is the way to go for me. Be interesting to see if that is the plan but because Bennett and Janko have been a thing the skeptic in me thinks he is a place holder and they'll just put Ryan back on that line and put Bennett on the 4th and be done with it. Would basically be the lineup the went into the stoppage with.

Hope i'm wrong but it would be right up Ward's ally to play it out that way.
