Lucic was wahed up before we got him.

We managed to get something out of him, but it was a garbage trade.

Lucic would be fantastic at $2-mil-per.  Considering leadership, physical presence, has some PP usage, etc.  It's the price.

Same with Derek Ryan.  At $1-mil-per, sign me up.  At $3-mil-per, ouch.  Can't afford a 4th liner at $3-mil-per.

Anything over $3.5-mil and I would be pissed.  He is going to be a 10G 20A guy on the Flames.

This exactly!

Past salaries are not a great indicator.

We paid Neal too much and then settled on Lucic for equal money and term.

We signed Ryan for more than we should have paid, but he's been everything from a 4th to 2nd liner and top PK'er.

I'm annoyed that we are paying so much for the 3rd line today.

Unless we moved Monahan or chose to move Lindholm back to RW, Backlund doesn't play on a line that should have $5.3m for a C.

So we have some decisions to make.

Trade Backlund for an asset and sign a younger C.

Trade Monahan for a winger or D and need to replace a younger player.

Trade Tkachuk for a top C, and still need a RW.

Sign a bunch of player in FA.

The expansion draft should open up some opportunities for trades.

If Gio is not picked, we need to take advantage and trade him to get better.

Seattle is going to have a bunch of players that don't really help them compete.

How many D do they need.

What was Frolik?

Overpaid a bit at the time, but part of our best shutdown line for years.

Ignoring for a minute his stats, how dangerous was Toronto with Hyman on the ice?

If the answer was not really, then he isn't worth pursuing.

The Flames will probably need to sign a top 4 LHD in free agency. Here are some options

Alec Martinez- Familiarity with Sutter. I'd stay away from this, the player is coming off a very good season. The soon-to-be 34yr old will command money and likely a 3yr term. It's also very unlikely, Prominent American UFA's seldom sign in Canada.

Alex Edler- This is the most likely signing for the Flames IMO given the amount of Swedes and the Tanev/Markstrom connection. I'd hope for a 1yr deal, but 2 would be the mst I'd go.

Jamie Oleksiak- He would be my top target, unlike most UFA's I think this player hasn't past his prime. There will be lots of competition for the player, may take a 4 or 5yr term to get it done.

Derek Forbort- I think of him more as a 3rd pairing guy, but he did pretty well for the Jets. I think the Flames liked him when he was here. Also some familiarity with the Coach.

Not a great D UFA class. Other possible options are Jake McCabe, Mike Reilly, Ben Hutton, Goligoski, Kulikov.

Not many players that are truly top 4 D.

I fully support that decision and think if we gave him the 5 years, might be able to look at a number around $3 - $3.5/year. He has a player I have wanted for a long time.

He would be my top D target too. Likely takes between 3-4 on a 4 or 5 yr term to get it done. Always end up overpaying in UFA, even more-so when you're a small makret like the Flames.

Assuming he makes it to FA.  Who is Seattle going to pick from available players in Dallas?

If he squeaks through, then Dallas would try to re-sign him.

The UFA market isn't the greatest.

Trade route might make some sense.

Annoying that we have to trade to replace Gio.

Should have done that prior to expansion draft freeze.

Dallas won't be losing much, if anything in the expansion draft. Most likely an AHLer.

I don't see them keeping Oleksiak, they have 5mill to spend and only 19 players signed.

Would have been hard to replace Gio prior to the freeze. The acquired player would have needed to be exposed. Unless that player took Tanev's spot. But then you'd need a top 4 RD.

Or they could have asked Backlund to

wave his M-NMC and exposed him? I know he’s worth something on the trade front but on the same note having the 5m in cap space would make

other moves much easier…I’m not sure if Backlund is better trade value than Gio or not…but pretty sure locking up the D early would have been a more productive use of time giving that the forward group is a complete mess and the D really only needs 2 holes filled…

I hope BT is smart and locks up the d situation with some younger players and only Tanev as our elder states man.

Only full NMC has to be protected.

Backlund has a full NTC... Which is not the same as NMC.  Starting this season, it's Modified-NTC.

I would be surprised to see Oleksiak get less than what Tanev got. I think the Tanev deal is likely your starting point for him and could easily see him getting north of that once the bidding gets going. I think He’s going to be a pricy add

He maybe but he’s 28 so he’s in the right age zone…plus a big left D LHS…so he’s probably gonna be 29 this season so maybe a short term deal or up to 5 and he would only be 34 by the end of it…hard to say would

tota depend on how much and how long but could be a great top 4 add on the LD side

I read where his projected salary was $4.1m x 5 years.

On the surface, I don't have a big issue with that, but it means we have replace another D-man with offense with a defensive guy.

While I think the defensive side of the game would be better, I think we would suffer too much without a PP specialist or offensive guy:

Hanifin-Tanev

Oleksiak-Ras

Valimaki-Stone/Mackey

Rasmus Andersson can be that guy. I know we haven’t seen it with the flames yet, but did anyone watch him when he was playing in Stockton? Was he first PP? Did he add to the offense? I know in Barrie he did. He was almost a point per game player there.

From what I’ve seen of Andersson, they just need to let that pony run and be creative. He’s looked like he has to play in a box after his first year with the flames. There’s definitely more to his game that we haven’t seen yet. If Gio is on the way out, we may actually get to see what Andersson is capable of. I also don’t mind what you did with the D pairings there TD. Looks pretty balanced (offensive / defensive) to me!

It's a concern both with the Sutter system and the way he has treated Ras and Valimaki.

I find it a little frustrating that we are still considering Stone to be part of the picture.

While he was steady, I don't know he is the best partner for Valimaki.

And the thing about Stone is he had his best season in years; do we think he's capable of doing that for 82 games?

For sure about Sutter.

Stone was good this year. I’d keep him around for sure, but that doesn’t mean we can’t add at a later time.

Yeah, I just mean is he still a 3rd pairing guy?  7th D-man, I have less issues.  Mackie could be in AHL as a potential injury replacement.

I am just a little concerned that he's had only 68 games in the last 3 seasons in total, so trotting him out for 82 seems like a bad idea.

I hear ya TD. It would be a risk, but at base salary I think it's a no brainer to keep him in the fold. Heck, the time off seems to have done him good!

I also just posted in the Trade Forum that Chicago has been trying to trade Zadorov to make room for Seth Jones... I'd prefer Oleksiak... maybe we can get both? ;)

Don't get me wrong, I think he is coming back here.

I would do a Kylington + 3rd for Zaddy.

I don't think he's that great a player, but he a dirty player to have.

Now, CHI would need to move out other players eventually to make room for Jones' next contract.

They have a bit of a break on Toews.

Nylander will get a bridge deal.

First mistake of UFA, in my opinion.

I figured in an earlier post that he would get close to what Brandon Tanev did. 3.5x6. He exceeded that here.

Good player and glad to see him get paid, but NYR likely isn't in a place where they give 6yrs to a known bottom 6 commodity.

Coleman will do really well, since his linemate got 6yrs

Brett Ritchie at $900k is looking good.
