Ohhhh, that's a puck in the logo! I thought it was a meteor in reverse or something!

Boy, do I love those shoulder patches. Love 'em on our jersey, love 'em on theirs!

Any word on assistant coaches yet ?

Very bottom of the Bouwmeester article.

NOTES: The Flames added Rob Cookson to the coaching staff as an assistant to Brent. . . Jared Bednar and Steve O'Rourke were named assistant coaches to Jim Playfair on their AHL team.

Whoever they are.

Jared Bednar

Steve O'Rourke

(The latter is not to be confused with the deceased Steve O'Rourke, former manager of Pink Floyd.) Our Steve O'Rourke comes to the Abbotsford Heat from the Okanagan Hockey School where he was the Operations Manager.

Worst name for a team ever? Especially one that is located in a temperate rainforest?

They named the team based on fan suggestions, but I'm thinking they just randomly chose the worst one.

By the way, the 4 finalists were Abbotsford Heat, Abbotsford Flames, Abbotsford Ice Hawks and Abbotsford Storm.

These are nice! Although the logo's kind of boring <_<

Much better than QCFlames, but Knights were the best!

Is anyone else a little worried about the travel this team will have to go through to even see its opponents?

The closest team by far is the Moose and they're 1800 km away. The Admirals (closest after the Moose) are 2700 km and the worst offender is Portland at a whopping 4000km.

Sucks? They'll be on a plane a lot I'm guessing...

Oh its going to be rough. That was a huge contention with putting the team there. In fact if i'm not mistaken the Abbotsford group/the Flames, actually are paying to subsidise the increased travel costs to the league. Its not a very convient location, but I think they will have some good success. They had a great turnout for their first preseason game and what reading the fans were actually quite excited about the Heat, even though they were playing the Moose which some thought might get a bigger ovation being the Canucks farm team and all.

The travel is really brutal, not only with the distance, but also with the scheduling of games. Example, Oct 23-25 / Feb 19-21 / Mar 19-21, three games in three nights on the road (three times), a nine game road trip Feb 12-27, and a total of 30 back-to-backs (not including the 3 3-in-3's). There will be huge challenges to overcome, and although we really like the look of this team, and think they can make the playoffs (myself included), fatigue will be the greatest opponent the Heat will face.

Abbotsford is playing UBC's hockey team on Wednesday night (if anyone's in Vancouver...) I hope to go up to UBC and watch. I'd rather go out there than Abbotsford itself, haha.

I live on campus at UBC so I walked over to watch. It was a decent game, UBC seemed intimidated to start and got down 3-0 but fought back to 3-2. They really drove for that tying goal and Abbotsford looked weak in the last few minutes. It seemed the Heat would give up on fights along the boards really quick comparatively.

Specific players of note:

-Backlund powered through several of the smaller UBC players but seemed to lose his touch on the puck a lot when trying to finesse by them.

-Sutter did not play?

-Greetree looked strong and fast. Skating was very smooth, acceleration was quick, but he still wasn't always in the right place to get/give the puck.

More info later...

Also worthy of note, Keetley started and played the shutout, then Irving came in midway in the second, and let in two. Take it as you will.

I heard some of the ubc players were getting a bit rough without cause - sort of loose cannonish - and the heat HAD to back off in order to avoid unnecessary career ending injuries?
