Signing: Kearns signs with Nats for 3 years/$17.5 million

It's baseball...it doesn't have to make sense. It just IS.

The Red Sox pay over $50 million just to TALK to a Japanese pitcher. That wasn't a contract or anything. They paid $50 million so they could talk contracts with him.

If they didn't sign him then the $50 mil wouldn't have been paid.

Back to Kearns. I think it's kinda funny that a team owned by MLB is overspending on players in Washington when they were in Montreal they tried to save every dime. I can see why they want to make it a competitive team to try to get local ownership, but why not back when it was in Montreal and had Guerrero and try to find ownership to move them somewhere where people might care about the team.

Hold on though...it's not as crazy as you think...

The Red Sox in the short-term have invested $100 mil in the pitcher, but you have to look at things from a broader perspective.

Japanese fans will now be interested in the Red Sox. Boston now pushes merchandise in one of the international economy's most affluent and populated markets, not to mention the most baseball-crazy market outside of the United States. Give the Sox 3-4 years, and the money they'll generate from merchandise sales and a new Japanese TV contract will more than cover what they paid to acquire the player.

Celtic FC did the same thing when they paid close to $6mil US to sign Shunsuke Nakamura from the Italian Serie A (btw, that's a ton of money for Scottish clubs)...but since then, Celtic is now the official adopted favourite club of most Japanese kids, they sell merchandise like crazy, all Celtic games are broadcast on Japanese sports networks...it's shrewd marketing. Not to mention they've opened up an avenue for talented Japanese players to make their way to Celtic Park.

Exact same idea. Just think about how many Ichiro shirts you see around North America...now think about how many Ichiro shirts and Mariners merch is sold in Japan, where he's to Japan what Gretzky was to Canada.
