Wow, that CTV deal is major. If they handle it right, this would give them a great chance of getting the Olympics, NHL, and CFL.

CBC is so screwed :P

Technically they have the OLympics and CFL as they are partners with TSN. CBC has already lost the CFL rights, and no longer have the Olympics past Bejing in 08.

all CBC has is hockey.

Isn't that in jeopardy too?

Actually, not until 2014. http://www.cbc.ca/arts/story/2007/03/26/hockey-night-in-canada.html' target="_blank">Link[/post]

The CBC and the NHL announced a new television deal Monday that will keep Hockey Night in Canada on the air until 2014.

Bettman said the new deal will feature fewer Toronto Maple Leafs games during the regular season, with more dates being allocated for other Canadian teams.

However, yes, earlier this season, before the deal, there was a lot of talk about CTV taking away HNIC, and the possibility of TSN's hockey crew to do HNIC. I hate both, but TSN's hockey broadcasts > CBC's.

That second quote is encouraging ... less Leafs, more other teams? Yay.

Even if CTV can't get HNIC, they should at least try to get some sort of NHL deal.

The more hockey in Canada, the better for the NHL revenue. Plus it builds CTV Sports stream and adds more competition to CBC.

CTV has the world cup too, they are doing pretty well.

So CTV has:

- Grey Cup this year

- FIFA WC 2010 and beyond

- Super Bowl next winter

- Rights to distrubute a lot of major US TV up here in Canada (like Idol etc)

- Majority of the Olympics rights

And soon, they'll probby even want for TSN to split NBA Final games, leaving CBC with measily HNIC as their lone thing that they do, unless you count their lacking curling coverage.

Its a good thing HNIC is a hulking juggernaut.
