I think there is a very fine line between "sport" and "game". Especially with some sports, and even with some games.

When I think of "sport" I think of an athletic contest that requires some form of physical dexterity that are used to achieve something, and hence to succeed. When you talk about "game" I think of something that, at minimum, requires mental dexterity.

Hackey-sack is definitely a "sport". Pool and darts? Pushing it but yes, both are sports. Auto racing? Definitely a sport (drive for four and a half hours at 200 km/h if you don't believe me). Baseball, Hockey, Golf, Basketball, Football? Obvious sports.

Poker? Game. Guitar hero? Game. (dons flame retardant suit). Monopoly? Game. Jacks? Game.

if you're silly enough to use television as your measuring stick, Starcraft is a sport - in Korea they have a 24 hour channel devoted to the game and some players make 6 figures playing professionally.

or poker net, or World Series of Poker. How is Poker a sport? There is nothing physical about it. Unless you count James bond wrestling some religious nuts with machetes, and getting canned in the nuts (Casino Royale). Or Shooting (various Cowboy movies that feature dead man's poker).

Yet it's on TSN or Sportswest.... Like how is sitting on your butt, playing clicky with the chips, and flipping over the card every now and then a sport? Like with Craps, at least you're throwing dice.

You try not peeing for 8...12...16 hours straight while you're playing. If that a monumental feat isn't sport worthy, then I don't know what is.

I enjoy it so I will join the 'sport' camp, just cause it is on all the sports channels. Outside of that it is a game, pure a simple...

...but aren't all sports games?

The only thing that knida pisses me off is why it is shown over more traditional sports on TV. Sure when there is nothing on, I can understand it but it is getting silly with the amount of coverage. Or even more to that, why do they keep showing the same thing over and ove again.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft_pro...nal_competition

The computer game StarCraft has an active professional competition circuit, particularly in South Korea. The two major game channels in South Korea, Ongamenet and MBCGame, each run a Starleague, viewed by millions of fans. Starting in about 2002, pro-gamers started to become organized into teams, sponsored by large South Korean companies like Samsung, SK Telecom and KTF. StarCraft is also the most popular computer game competition during the annual World Cyber Games thanks to its Korean fanbase, and it is overall one of the world's largest computer and video game competitions in terms of prize money, global coverage and participants.

  • Lim Yo-Hwan (SlayerS `BoxeR`) (Terran)
Known as the "Terran Emperor", Boxer is the most popular StarCraft player in StarCraft history due to his highly creative play. He is also one of the most successful, being the only StarCraft player to win the World Cyber Games (WCG) twice. He has also won the OnGameNet Starleague (OSL) twice (only 5 players have achieved that). He holds the record for being number 1 in KeSPA's rankings for 17 consecutive months. Boxer made a comeback in 2005, making it to the finals of the So1 OSL 2005, but had to retire from professional gaming to join the Korean military service, which is mandatory for all Korean males. On 3 October 2006 he played his rival [NC]...Yellow in "Superfight", which he won 3-2. His total record of televised matches before he joined the Korean Air Force was 500 wins and 338 losses. Recently, Boxer became one of the first members of the Korean Air Force pro-gaming team ACE (an acronym of Air Force Challenges E-sports), where he continues playing as a pro-gamer. He made the GomTV 2 MBC Game Starleague in 2007, but was eliminated in the group stages.

It's a sport because it gets a bigger audience than the NHL.

In the states... but who cares about them. Bettman would never let the NHL crumble even though hes an Gary Bettman hole

Yeah play some heads up until 4 in the morning and it becomes not so much a sport but an endurance contest and really tests your patience in a serious way. Poker (texas hold'em) is mentally exhausting. But so much fun to play I love it.

poker players, bowlers, golfers DO NOT EQUAL athletes, and they do not participate in sports.

Athletes, in their off season, do what.......play cards, bowl, hunt, and GOLF.

Golfers in their off season, do what.....play HOCKEY?!

Obviously you've never played golf.

You obviously do not realize that if you hit the ball straight, and walk 18 holes of golf, you are walking nearly 7 kilometres.

(If you don't hit the ball straight, add between 25% and 50% to that distance)

Not to mention Golfers have more skill then any Hockey player. Like really anyone that can consistently hit a golf ball 300 yards within 10 yards of where they wanted takes skill, not to mention when they hit it 150 yards within a couple feet.
