how is poker a sport??

Recommended Posts

Who says it is?

Although "sport" is really about your own perception, I don't know of many people that say yes to poker.

Oh god, here we go with the golf is not a sport argument again....

mod edit- please don't link to other forums. We don't appreciate news from the outside world. ;)

Well then i guess Guitar Hero is a sport. Its definitely physical and ultra competitive. LOL Ive never liked this debate... Ive got into it before with friends about pool.. is that a sport? what about hackey sack?

hacky sack is definatly a sport. It involves, kinetics, if played fast it can be a good source of cardio.

I think it's a sport. Mainly because of the competitive factor.

I like playing it too, and there are some nights when it's pretty physical... reaching over to grab those chips time and time again :)

I think there is a very fine line between "sport" and "game". Especially with some sports, and even with some games.

When I think of "sport" I think of an athletic contest that requires some form of physical dexterity that are used to achieve something, and hence to succeed. When you talk about "game" I think of something that, at minimum, requires mental dexterity.

Hackey-sack is definitely a "sport". Pool and darts? Pushing it but yes, both are sports. Auto racing? Definitely a sport (drive for four and a half hours at 200 km/h if you don't believe me). Baseball, Hockey, Golf, Basketball, Football? Obvious sports.

Poker? Game. Guitar hero? Game. (dons flame retardant suit). Monopoly? Game. Jacks? Game.

I agree, there is a difference between a "sport" and a "game". In golf you can be John Daly, smoke too much, eat too much and treat yourself like garbage and win tournaments. Same as poker, you dont have to be fit and in good health to excel at it. These are not sports IMO.

I'll add another the the game list...Bowling? Game.

Go walk four miles in four and a half hours, while swinging a golf club about 65-75 times in between. Then do that every day for four days straight, then tell me golf isn't a sport...

I golf a lot, I agree its tough, but there is only a few professional golfers who will put the effort into their fitness. Tiger Woods and Adam Scott to name a few off the top of my head. But I guess this isn't about golf it's about poker, and poker is not a sport IMO. I guess I'm in the minority since its all over the "sports networks".

How about darts? I recall during one of the baseball strikes that was all they played on TSN one summer.

It's still on, premier leugue darts I think its called.

How about mini-golf? If golf is a sport, mini-golf should be classified as a sport also. I want to see the World Championship of Mini-Golf.

A million dollars to play Star Craft?!?!!?!?

cyber athletics R srs bznz.

There are cash tournaments all the time for video games and they are already defining themselves not as a sport but as a virtual sport and the players are not athletes but Cyberathletes. So luckily no one has to flame Barney about Guitar Hero not being a "sport". ;)

I've seen a few tournaments that had $25,000 or more in prizes. The CPL world tour had $300,000 in prizes.

Also, endorsements can get to be pretty impressive as well. If you do some searches for the top players / teams in various games you can often find out about their sponsorships. I think Fatal1ty was one of the top ranked player for a few things and ended up with some decent sponsorships and having his name thrown onto a few product lines for various things from sound cards to mice.

I'd say strip poker is a sport. Otherwise, no.

I'd sign up for that league. ;)

The only thing remotely "sport" about poker is the physical challenge of playing poker for XX hours straight. I mean, if you go to a big tournament and play for 10 hours of poker, that is somewhat taxing. After that you could try to claim that the 'art' of bluffing and reading people is somehow athletic. Really though, both arguments are massive stretches in trying to justify poker as a sport.

Guitar Hero should be a sport! :D

Who here can do Through The Fire and Flames on Expert? I failed just before the solo :(..

BACK ON TOPIC! I think a sport is defined if there is a lot physical action while thinking. Poker does not classify because it is mostly thinking, and then you just say something, or throw your chips.

In one of my courses at university, an assignment was to design a definition for "sport". It was much harder than it sounds.

or poker net, or World Series of Poker. How is Poker a sport? There is nothing physical about it. Unless you count James bond wrestling some religious nuts with machetes, and getting canned in the nuts (Casino Royale). Or Shooting (various Cowboy movies that feature dead man's poker).

Yet it's on TSN or Sportswest.... Like how is sitting on your butt, playing clicky with the chips, and flipping over the card every now and then a sport? Like with Craps, at least you're throwing dice.

It's competitive. That's pretty much my definition of a sport. But you're right. It's a fad. It won't be there much longer.

I dont know how you can watch poker (I enjoy playing it) but watching it on tv? no way..its even more boring than watching golf!

Ha ha! While I enjoy playing golf, it is a bit of a bore to watch on TV. Poker, on the other hand, is a game I love to watch, as I always find tips and strategies to improve my game(which needs constant improvement....hope I can win the baby back someday). I like watching it on TV, and it HAS to have as much SPORT status as say, the National Dog Show . Doesn't it?

You have to admit though, the players do have their personalities. There's this one Chinese guy who wore a pimping purple hat for good luck.... It was a womans' hat. And I see those chip piles and drooollllll.... So much money enough for life times! Like just plop their winnings in a bank, and watch it grow...

It's not a sport, it's television station's ratings dream: Cheap to show and lots of viewers.
