I think the Lions had more problems than can be listed. Everything staring right in the front office down to they quality of players on the feild. Their #1 QB (Kitna)gets hurt, they throw him on the IR even though he says he can play. They then go through four QB's during the remaining games of the season. They only really have one NFL quality reciever in Calvin Johnson. Former President/GM Matt Millen has not drafted a good player in recent years, although rookie RB Kevin Smith was a bright spot for the Lions' offense. I hope they don't fire head coach Rod Marinelli, he did what he could with what he had and did everything possible to keep the team possitive. With the right changes in the front office, hopefully some smart drafting in the upcoming draft and signing a few quality free agents, next years Lions could very well be like the Dolphins or Falcons this year. I feel bad for the players on that team for the season they just endured, but hey, things can only get better for them next year.

Its actually pretty simple. They have disfunctional managment from ownership down.

1. their owner doens't care about winning, he cares about profit. And even thought they have sucked for a while, Lions still do very well in attendence and profit. Thus why it took so long for him to fire Milen. He didn't see the need becuase he was still making lots of money. But that leads to point 2.

2. Matt Millen. Just a flat out awful GM. 3 straight years of wideouts in the first round and 4 in 5 years and really only 1 of which looks like he was worth it in Calvin Johnson. He busted with Joey Harrington which will always set your franchise back at least 4 years. It would be different if he was finding steals but he isn't. Unless you count Orvlovsky, which I woulnd' tbe he isn't exactly good, he hans't found anyone outside of the 3rd round to contribute in a positive way. combine that with the amount of first round busts, and you have awful drafting. that and he pulls of some very bad trades. He gave away on of the best DT in the game in Shaun Rogers, which was really all that was keeping his defence respectable anyway. Dre bly trade also did not pan out.

3. Coaching. Now its hard to put that much on the coaches because its a downwrad filter, but they hanv't helped. I thought Marinelli actual got them playing fairly well most Sundays, but it was his decision to purge his defence in the offseason and go with a pure tampa 2. Even though he is not a tampa 2 specialist and had no where near the talent to play that kind of a system. Injuries didn't help him, but at the same time that decision really hurt him as well. I doubt he gets another year, and quite frankily I don't thik he should.

4. culture - the Lions are stuck in a culture of losing and have been since Sanders retired. They don't attract FA because of this culture. They lost some games and it tends to spiral. They have star players, aka Roy Williams, who can be very happy one year and dissapointed the next becuase thats the Lions, they just have that culture that eventually they will lose.

They have a long way to go IMO. They do have a boatload of picks thanks to the Roy Williams trade, but they need help everywhere. They could pull a Falcon or Dolphin type turnaround but i'm not sold. The Falcons were never as bad on paper as the Detroit Lions. Their defence last year were missing some guys, had a disfunctional Deagelo Hall, and a not 100% John Abraham. The Falcons didn't really have that far to go and were able to attract Michael Turner. I'm not sure the Lions will have that same success in FA.

Dolphins, well thats Bill parchels. If the Lions can get Bill parcells, who apparnatly has the opportunity to opt out of his deal this year, that would be the only chance I think they have of a turnaround. Or maybe get Scott Piolle out of the Patriots system as he apparantly is looking for a new challenge. either way, I expect it to be a tough year for the Lions again next year. However, if they nail their draft this year (with 2 1st round picks as well) the year after may not be as bleak.

I actually was hoping this would happen with the Dolphins last year. Now my dream came true! Gotta be bad..ROFL

I was cheering for Detroit to go 0-16 as well (and Miami last year too )

Now, I actually like the Lions somewhat and was behind them last year when they started off 6-2 before crapping the bed and I feel sorry for all the piss-poor management their fans have had to endure for years. But I just love seeing history being made, especially in the NFL, so I wanted to see 0-16 happen. I was disappointed when Miami won a game last year :P

No suprise and it didn't take long

Lions Fire Marinelli

Its a little unfortuante, becuae he got a team that had almost no skill to work every hard even down the stretch. However, ultimately your responsible for your record and not winning a game is not good enough. They need a change. However, what is troubling is that the owner promoted from within to replace the GM and president spots.

Well the Lions schedule wasn't too easy either the only played 4 games against below .500 teams being a 5-11 Jags, 6-10 Pack twice, and 7-9 Niners. And played the NFC south where every team was .500 or better. Maybe if they would of got teams like the Rams, Chiefs, Seahawks or Ohio teams it could of been different.

Everyone wants to be able to tell their kids/grandkids that they were part of a record breaking team.......so I think we should be congratulating the Lions on their new record!!!

Congratulations to all of the Lions.....people who's names I don't know or care about to be completely honest....

Why does the NFL have such a short season?

Short Season + 60K+ Seating + Biggest TV Sports Event Ever + Bigger TV Contracts = More Money then the NHL anyways.

I don't see Detroit losing all their games this year. I think they are going to win 1 or 2 for sure. But they are still an awful team.

Stafford IMO, is overrated. Sanchez was the better QB IMO. Showed it yesterday, but yes it is still early.

Their Offensive line is a mess and is terrible, their secondary is also suspect thus why Drew Brees light them up yesterday. They have some players on D, but not enough.

With a perfect offeseason, they could be ok next year, but more than likely I think they are 2 years away from winning. Jim Schwartz was a solid hire and he'll have to convince the team to start buildling the right way.
